Johnston Gardens, popular with residents and tourists alike and often featured in wedding photographs, has recently become the subject of public complaints about its deteriorating condition.
One of the main causes for complaint is the discolouration of the water of the pond by the silt contamination of the watercourses that flow into this formerly attractive feature.
Residents have complained about seeing rats in the gardens. We are pursuing this complaint rigorously.
Many residents remember the gardens in former times as a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. Clearly they need to be restored to their former glory.
Our Community Council supports Councillor Ross Thomson’s aspiration to form “Friends of Johnston Gardens” as a group of citizens who are keen to actively work on the maintenance and improvement of the gardens. The Community Council will publicise the bid for the formation of the Friend’s group.
Recently exceptional and prolonged rainfall has caused flooding in much of the city. In Queens Road, Springfield Road and many of the streets surrounding these thoroughfares, poorly maintained water gullies have resulted in deep water lying on roadways. We have raised the issue of blocked water gullies with Council Officers and will continue to seek improvements to the drainage systems of this area.
